HOTEL REVIEWS
‘Fully lived up to its outstanding reputation,’ write
visitors to this small hotel this year. ‘John and Martina Sheedy run a very
friendly but efficient ship.’ Earlier, an inspector wrote of their ‘personal
approach’. The yellow building, in neat grounds, has been owned by John
Sheedy’s family since the 18th century. He is an ‘accomplished’ cook; his wife,
Martina, is the ‘hands-on, charming’ manager. Bedrooms, in the main house and a
modern extension, are ‘well cared for’: ‘Ours was spacious, cool, decorated in
excellent taste.’ Pre-dinner drinks are taken in a bright sun lounge. The
modern cooking (eg, seared scallops with coriander and lentil sauce), served in
a ‘pleasant, light’ dining room, is ‘of a very high standard’. Bar meals might
include crab claws in garlic, chilli and ginger butter. Breakfast, served at
table, has ‘real’ juice, home-made preserves, good teas, interesting cooked
dishes. The spa resort is famed for its annual match-matching festival in
September. Nearby are the Cliffs of Moher where a new ‘eco-friendly’ visitor centre
has been controversial: ‘The Sheedys provided us with a refreshing haven in
which to recover from the concreting ravages being committed at the cliffs.’
